Jane Eyre and the Triumph of Love: Summary & Analysis
In this lecture, we explore and explain the meaning of Charlotte Bronte's great masterpiece Jane Eyre. In discussing Jane Eyre, we learn that it is a pilgrim's story, specifically a pilgrim's tale of how love and forgiveness brings healing and new life into a world of cruelty and darkness.

The Meaning of American Literature
Просмотров 290День назад
In this lecture, we explore and explain the meaning of classic nineteenth century American literature with Crevecoeur, Emerson, Hawthorne, Cooper, and Melville. Looking at the theme of the American Adam and American Eden in The Scarlet Letter, The Last of the Mohicans, and Moby-Dick, we discover American literature is profoundly skeptical of the hope and optimism that governs the American ideal...

The Meaning of Homer's Iliad: Love, War, and Peace in the Cosmos
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.21 день назад
In this lecture, we examine and explain the true meaning of Homer's Iliad and the metamorphosis of Achilles. In exploring Homer's Iliad, especially in relationship to Hesiod's Theogony, we learn that it is not a celebration of war and violation but a subtle deconstruction of it. Instead of war, true heroism is found in love. 0:00-3:19 - Introduction to Homer 3:19-19:31 - Hesiod's Theogony 19:31...

The Meaning of Greek Drama: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides
Просмотров 886Месяц назад
In this lecture, we explore the origin, meaning, and evolution of Greek drama by looking at the playwrights Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Using the humanistic framework of Giambattista Vico, we begin to understand Greek drama and poetry as the beginning of intellectual wrestling with the nature and destiny of the cosmos, man, and the purpose of human existence. 0:00-24:11 - Aeschylus 24:...
Why the Left Sees Fascism Everywhere!
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Месяц назад
In this lecture on Late Capitalism and Fascism, we explain why the Left sees fascists and fascism everywhere. Looking at the New Marxist historical imagination and its revision of understanding capitalism and fascism, we learn that fascism is a historic phase of capitalism: late capitalism. To be an anti-fascist also means to be anti-capitalist. And in the new Marxist imaginary of world history...

Introduction to Thomas Hobbes: The Leviathan
Thank you. a well articulated work!
Just want to say, you’ve done a great job editing/distilling the subject matter to it’s essence so as to be as easily digestible as possible. A great service to those seeking. Only 12 minutes in, I can “see” that if I pay attention, I’ll get about 12-15 hours of college lectures in 2+ hours. Impressive. Bravo.
Judge me if you want, but I want the hypothesis that: the ills of Communism/Fascism that stem from the Socialism of these “German ideals” desperately seeking to pervert and replace a Christian Mindset with “enlightenment” (a new spin on the serpent in the garden/Luciferianism). Here we go.
To complete the thought: I want to see if this video supports or refutes the socialism/naziism/communism result that was the death of millions last century and threatens the West now.
Numerous scholars and other thinkers have thought this so you're in good company!
Thomas Scott Hernandez Mary Harris Jennifer
Great analysis!
This is great. Thank you
Thanks for this. I recently reposted a critique of the misuse of Fascism so common today by explaining what it meant for Mussolini and Hitler, but your comments about current trends in Marxism, etc. helped me understand more what is going on today.
Thank you for this insightful commentary on Kirk and the moral imagination. Dr. Kirk was one of my readers for my dissertation on Chesterton. Also, you mention being a student of Roger Scruton. At Cair Paravel Latin School, from which I recently retired, we would show Scruton's video "Why Beauty Matters" to introduce the section on aesthetics. Keep up the good work.
Could you male video about Friedrich Schleiermacher On religion. Thenk you.
I haven't read Schleiermacher since I was a grad student at Yale. But maybe we'll get to him one day since he is so important and I'm somewhat partial to him.
This was excellent! Given the ground covered, very concise, informative, and approachable, especially Hegel. Some seem to really go out of the way to bash Hegel. Easier to shake a fist than read a book I suppose.
Well done! I don't have the same depth of the history, but it's been clear for a while that "fascism" has become a pejorative label, basically means little more than "not socialist" and therefore bad.
Another excellent lecture.
But if I am understanding Fichte correctly, the understanding of the non Ich requires some kind of magical or mystical overcoming of the boundaries of self. Has anyone in the history of the world ever been able to achieve this? At least Kant promotes the golden rule, which is doable. Or am I missing something?
@@walterbenjamin1386 you’re not missing anything. Fichte’s philosophy does have a mystical side to it.
@@PaulJosephKrause And people must have believed it was possible to overcome the Ich - non-Ich gulf or his ideas never could have become so pervasive. Fichte's thought seems prescriptive, like a technique for overcoming the isolation of the self, in a way that seems somewhat reminiscent of Buddhism. Kant's categorical imperative is ethical but Fichte sounds religious. Your presentations are immensely helpful - so informative and impressively presented. I really appreciate your work and can't believe that instruction of this quality is here on YT.
Masterful presentation! Hamann’s ideas resonate with my own thoughts about language. Years ago I read Hayakowa’s Language in Thought and Action which planted a seed about language that’s flourished. I also remember Sartre discussing the difference between signs and symbols, another addition to my inner thought garden about language. And then there are the words that Shaw gives to Henry Higgins about the God given gift of language . Forgive an old grandparent for reminiscing about the early flowers of language in my thought history.
Nothing wrong with reminiscing, ideally, we are life-long learners until death!
I remember the cartoon when I was a kid. I didn't know it was based on a true story.
Thanks for the videos, perhaps I can get someone to listen to one. After spending a lot of time researching Marxism, Communism, and Wokism, and reading books about the Cultural Revolution in China with Mao's bloody interpretation of Marxism, I'm deeply concerned that many people in academia and beyond still believe that "Communism hasn't been tried." They seem unable to recognize the potential for dystopia if Marxist Communism-now interpreted through a woke lens-doesn't work this time and once again leads to a totalitarian regime, this time in the Western world. This woke mentality has become a religion of sorts, where any discussion or argument against it is treated like blasphemy. I'm often labeled a conspiracy theorist for simply pointing out the history of the 20th century. It’s become almost impossible to have a meaningful conversation about this movement that's sweeping across Western political establishments. Just recently, the country I was originally from is showing signs of authoritarian rule. It won't be the last. Well done to all those indoctrinated by this woke religious movement. The woke must wake up.
I thought this was being narrated by kantbot for a second. Very similar voice.
In Antiquity, Southeastern Canaan or the southern part of modern Israel was a very important center for copper smelting. Although biblical writings suggest a southern Canaanite origin for the god "Yahweh" no details are provided concerning his worship, prior to him becoming the god of Israel. That said, the geographic territory of Judea or Southern Canaan was occupied by a tribe of Shepherds and Metalsmiths called "Kenites" in the Bible, who are thought to be descended from the Biblical Cain. ("Tubal-Cain") While the Old Testament describes Yahweh separate and distinct from the gods of Canaan, scholars identified the god Yahweh as originally being the god of the "Kenites" a tribe of Edomites and was later identified by the Israelites with the god of Abraham. The Israelite Cult of Yahweh was associated with copper and with the bronze serpent, a typical symbol of metallurgy as the smelting of copper is considered in the Old Testament as the specific sign of "Yahweh." Anthropologically speaking, a parallel exist between Yahweh and the god of metallurgy worshipped in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Edom. We know from the archeological record that Yahweh was in fact worshipped as Dionysius in the later classical era and therefore becoming publicly worshipped in Israel Yahweh was associated with The Guild of Metallurgists of Edom, the territory just below Judea in the land of Canaan.
I taught myself Latin during the Covid lockdowns just to read Vergil. It was worth it.
That's so awesome and cool. Good for you!
Sounds more like a Dallas Theological Seminary sermon than a philosophy lecture, with noble Christians fighting the good fight against Satan's duped minions, who only pretend to be philosophers. Nevertheless, there's some useful tidbits.

What if Ahab wants even more. The White Whale is Kant’s wall. The thing in itself. Knowledge of true reality that one would need the mind and power of God to possess. To kill the white whale is to become like God or die trying. So, is Ahab a Romantic hero or an enlightenment hero? I say it’s Romantic. And we have a lot of Ahabs working overtime in the world today. Under the guise of science and Enlightenment, they really are Romantics seeking apotheoses. Just a thought. I think you mention search for divinity. I still think Ahab is Romantic. Real Enlightenment scientists are humble before their inquiries into Nature and what is found there. A theses I’m trying to work out. That’s all.
It’s great you’re working this out while also listening to this! That’s what it is all about.

I had to listen to the part about Schelling several times. I need a better understanding of what Schelling means by nature. Thank you for these excellent lectures.

Voegelin is the most unsung and ironically the most profound 20th c philosopher
Yes he is. Unfortunately, he isn't the easiest read so hopefully those of us who do read and teach Voegelin can help others start to understand him. Because when you do, he is, as you say, the most profound of 20th century philosophers.

Recently wanted to know more on this topic. Thanks for another enlightening video
This is starting to sound like alchemy - the coniunctio oppositorum. Was this transmitted through Boehme?
I'm just excited you apparently know Boehme. He is obviously too obscure to bring into explanatory lectures, but yes, he's actually a "hidden" influence on many of the German Idealists and Romantics. Especially Schelling. Hegel also acknowledged him as a great thinker.
@@PaulJosephKrause When I first began investigating German philosophy, I came across a book called The Mystical Sources of German Romantic Philosophy by Ernst Benz. It helped me start to crack the idealists. I have a background in Indian philosophy from a masters in South Asian Studies and that has helped more than anything in trying to comprehend this German tradition. There are similarities but also many differences. Your lectures are splendid! Thank you so much for your generosity.
I think you underestimate how slow of a learner i am, sir. It took me 20 minutes just to google what phenomenology meant, and I'm still not sure i actually understand it..this is going to take way longer than half an hour
I read the Iliad, Pope's translation, but yet I had never been into it. I couldn't blend with its supposed qualitative experience, neither did I really care much about the events unfolding. But I do believe in its importance, that is why I am looking for some guidance or analysis to ease off the barriers...
How kind of you to gift us this lucid presentation. Impressive.
If they are assigning Trollope to freshmen, I dare say, none of them will suffer from insomnia. Not really the ideal audience these days for the goings on of the English ecumenical set in the 19th century. But maybe I misjudge today’s undergraduates and do them a disservice.
What a majestic gothic novel ❤

Thank you for the content though!!!! This is great and im very greatful
I'm well aware, LOL. Honest mistake.
Thank you for the video ! I was going through Marxist litterature, and was disturbed to see that they believe that fascism is a phenomena that appear after a decay of capitalism, or that fascism is a weapon that the bourgeoise will use in last resort to defend itself from the proletariat. As a reactionary, these ideas were very odd to me. And yet I have come to believe that they are struggling with the same elephant but seen from the other side. It is common among reactionaries to say that fascism is a understandable, though crazy reaction to the decay of liberalism and modernity (capitalism in the marxist mind), or that when the left goes crazy the moderate right (the bourgeoisie in the marxist mind) starts to shift towards the right as a legitimate reaction to craziness. Though we would never say that fascism is used by the bourgeoisie to further its ends (really ?). Those claims are very similar if you think about it. As such I have come close to agreeing with the communist theorists though I am someone who comes from the far right. I do feel it is hard to read all of these political theorists in a sincere way while also keeping your own sanity.
Thank you. Do you have this in a book that I can Buy?
Only Schopenhauer understood and built upon Kant. Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel are idiots. If you want good process philosophy which talks about the coincidence of opposites, read Whitehead and Hartshorne. Hegel thought the Prussian state and constitutional monarchy were the pinnacle of political theory. Kant's philosophy is better because he's responding to the serious intellectual challenge posed by Hume. Hegel is just asserting things. At best, you can see him as a historian like Thomas Carlyle, trying to understand themes in history. But does anyone seriously believe that national geists have ontological existence? Stirner would call Hegel's "metaphysics" a spook.
Hegel did not try to build upon Kant. How is Hegel "just asserting things"? Provide examples
So, is this the guy who first said that every nation has the government it deserves? Based!
your channel is a wealth of knowledge and interesting topics going back years! thank you so much for these videos
This is a beautiful analysis. My one sentence meaning summary of these stories would be something like “to everything there is a season” but pulling out the love and forgiveness aspect and showing how these are emphasized in the Iliad was touching.
great video brother. somewhat similar to the 'oral troy' (i don't know what you would call this in english) which know from my grandfather (i am greek). the only question is, why does this not have more views? why don't all of your videos? top quality content, but perhaps if you invested in an editor to add a bit more visual stimulus, it could help with getting you the gains in viewership to which your vast knowledge entitles you. keep up the good work brother.
I appreciate the kind words and am glad you have found this talk insightful and fruitful.
